Run Lola Run Essay

In the film Run Lola Run by Tom Tykwer Lola is a memorable character. The director uses many techniques to make her memorable, such as camera techniques. Lola is loving, driven and unstoppable. She is always running, desperate to save her love from his dire circumstances. Tracking alongside her makes the audience feel as if they are running alongside her. It also emphasises that she is always running. A similar feeling is caused when she runs towards a camera which zooms in on her as zooms out as she runs past. This gives the impression that the audience is a bystander that Lola is running past, this makes Lola seem driven and unstoppable. These camera techniques make Lola seem more memorable and interesting.

Another feature which makes Lola memorable is music. Tykwer uses music as a tool to make Lola seem fast, unrelenting and headstrong. The fast upbeat techno music emphasises that time is running out as well as the stress of the situation Lola is in. the music helps the audience to feel Lola’s stress and intensity as she runs and helps to build up suspense. The music portrays Lola’s emotions; this is proven when the music becomes happy and romantic when Lola thinks she has succeeded after the heist. The music is a tool which is used to make Lola memorable by letting the audience know her emotions.

Lola is also feisty and passionate which is shown by the colour of her hair. The red makes her look unique and interesting and it matches her attitude. Her hair also works to make her stand out. As well as being the colour of her hair the colour red seems to be drawn to Lola, this is shown when a red ambulance pulls up next to her when she’s running. The colour red is also used in the scenes of Manni and Lola in bed discussing their relationship. The colour makes it clear that it is a flashback and the colour red shows that it is a fond memory of Lola’s opposed to the black and white colour during the flashback of Lola’s moped being stolen. The colours in this movie are used to make things stand out and be memorable.

Another feature used by the director to make Lola memorable in this film is the film quality. When Lola or Manni are on camera the footage is high resolution with sharp contrasts and bright, lively colouring. When the less important characters such as Lola’s Dad and his mistress are shown the film is grainy, flat and makes the characters seem less important.  The use of this effect makes it clear to the audience who is important and who isn’t. This feature, like many others make it clear that Lola and Manni’s love is the Heart of the story as well as making Lola interesting and memorable.
